If you are looking for ways to earn extra money and you found your way here, you must be wondering, are online surveys worth it? Online surveys are popular on the internet as an easy way to get into the online earning economy. Are they worth your time or are you better off spending your time elsewhere?

I will answer this question with some practical examples gained from my experience doing online survey and task work on some of the various survey sites. Firstly I will explain what online surveys are and why they pop up so much when it comes to methods of earning money online. Online

What Are Online Surveys?

Online surveys are surveys that are used as market research by companies who create products or services. These companies want to get consumer feedback to improve and tailor their offerings to consumers’ tastes to make sure that what they are offering sells. Survey platforms or websites are the go-between between the company who is doing the market research and the consumer (you).

The survey platform gives you surveys which you qualify for and you are paid a fee for completing the survey. In our definition of online surveys we will also include additional methods of earning such as micro-tasks and offers, which form the suite of earning methods on the prominent websites that offer online surveys.

Are Online Surveys Worth It?

Whether online surveys are worth it depends on where in the world you are, and what your earning expectations are. The minimum wage varies in countries around the world, from as little as less than $0.1 to as high as $15. Depending on where you are in the world or what your personal circumstances are, you could find the pay to be great or terrible.

I will use one of the prominent survey platforms that I have worked on to detail how much you can earn doing surveys and whether it is worth it or not depending on where you are.

How Much Can You Make With Online Surveys

Clixsense is one of the prominent survey websites that offer survey work to people all over the world. Another platform similar to Clixsense is PrizeRebel. There are other popular surveys which are only available to specific regions such as North America or USA. For this reason, we will use them as the example as that will be a better representation for what the majority of people across the world can expect.

ClixSense gives members the opportunity to earn money through surveys, micro-tasks and various other offers. Of all the earning methods, surveys pay the most. There payment for surveys can vary from $0.25 to $1.25, but the majority of surveys average out to about $1 for a survey. These surveys will usually take around 30 to 40 minutes to complete. This brings the hourly rate for a survey to about $1.5 per hour. From my experience I get around 4-5 surveys a day that I qualify for so I could make perhaps 4 dollars a day for 2-3 hours work.

The additional methods of earning pay a good amount less than surveys do so the above is the ceiling for how much you can earn as an hourly rate. What these additional methods add is due to the fact that they are not limited in number like surveys are. So those who have time on their hands can complete the additional earning tasks to work increase their earning so more than 3-5 dollars a day. If one completes all the surveys daily, they can earn around $120 a month working 2-3 hours a day.

One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure

Depending on where you are, the hourly rate can be good or bad. If you are in the UK where the minimum wage is equivalent to almost $10, an hourly rate of one seventh of the minimum wage will be unacceptable to many. In South Africa, the rate is equal to what the minimum wage is which would be acceptable. In India where the minimum wage is $0.4 per hour, the rate is 3-4 times the minimum wage and many would be happy to earn this much.

Another example of people for whom surveys might be attractive are people who have been unemployed for a long time or students. Students have a lot of time on their hands, much of which goes to waste. Most don’t have any income either so an extra $120 a month can go a long way. The same applies to unemployed people and retirees.

Overall, however, the compensation for doing surveys is very low compared to other ways that people earn money online. Another issue besides, besides the pay, is the disqualification from surveys that one has already started. This is both emotionally straining and frustrating because of wasted time. Also, effective pay rate becomes less when you consider the time lost for surveys that you are disqualified for.

Pros Of Online Surveys

  • Easily accessible – Surveys are the easiest thing to get into, especially for beginners to online earning. Anybody can get in and even a 13-year old can do the tasks that are required.
  • Can be done on smartphone – This adds a great convenience. The majority of online jobs have to be done on a computer. This aspect of surveys is both physically and logistically convenient. There are also a great deal more people who have cellphones than laptops.
  • No commitment required – Online surveys can be done when you have time. Other online jobs or payment solutions often require a minimum amount of hours dedication per week. With online surveys you can do many of them on while you are waiting for a bus or when you have time to kill.

Cons Of Online Surveys

  • Very low rates – The pay rates for online surveys are among the lowest known on the internet. The money is only good for a few inexpensive things will very unlikely be enough for necessities such as bills. If your expense are all your own then you cannot have surveys as a sole source of income.
  • Time wasted on disqualified surveys – Being disqualified late into a survey is tantamount to not being paid for work done. A lot of time can be lost sifting through surveys to get to one that you qualify for.

What Are Better Paying Alternatives?

The allure of online surveys come from the fact that they have virtually no entry requirements. Anybody who can use a computer or smartphone and is of eligible age can register on a survey websites.

There are better-paying alternatives to online surveys but they come with increasing entry requirements.

Transcription: This is the easiest earning method to get into online after online surveys and tasks. For transcription, you need to be fluent in the transcription language, usually English, and have a good grasp of the grammar and spelling. Additionally, you need to have good listening skills. Check out our transcription reviews for some options.

Academic Writing: There are websites such as Livingston Research which pay members for academic writing. Here, you essentially do somebody’s homework and get paid for it. For this type of work you need to at least have completed a degree because most of the jobs on the platform are university/college assignments.

Crowdsourcing Jobs: These jobs pay very well and because of that, there is a higher demand for them than there is supply. Unlike the other mentioned jobs, crowdsourcing platforms are not hiring continuously. To get on there you have to apply when there is an opening. Because of the high demand, they are selective and choose the best possible candidates. So even if qualifications are not a prerequisite, they can be a factor if you are competing with someone who has them. My recommnendation for this type of work is Lionbridge.

Freelancing: If you have a skill, you can sell your services on online marketplaces for freelancers. Fiverr and Upwork are the popular ones. Depending on how valuable your service is, you can make a pretty penny on websites like this. The challenge with freelancing marketplaces is that it can be hard to get in when you start out. People who have been there longer and have good ratings because of get most of the work. There is also the issue of cheapening skills as things can often turn into a bidding war where the client chooses the cheapest option.

Conclusion

For most people with work exposure, online surveys are not worth it because of how little they pay. They can be an acceptable source of income for students, retirees, or unemployed people who have no other viable options. There are, however, better-paying alternatives available online.
